About Sonora

Radio Sonora Jakarta first went on air on August 8, 1972, on the AM band and transitioned to FM in 1988. The establishment of Radio Sonora was initiated by the late Mr. P.K Ojong, one of the founders of the Kompas Gramedia Group, who aspired to create a multi-platform media entity. Similar to media groups in the United States, which own radio stations, TV stations, newspapers, publishing houses, and printing companies, the founding of Radio Sonora was a step toward realizing Mr. P.K Ojong's vision of establishing a television station.

KG Radio Network has a vision and mission to enlighten and educate the nation through the broadcast content, adhering to three core values in its content delivery: humanity, optimism, and benefit.

Since its inception over 50 years ago, specifically on August 8, 1972, Radio Sonora has played a significant role in the nation's journey. Sonora has been present during numerous historic and important national and international events. Radio Sonora is grateful to have witnessed and experienced the transition of leadership from seven of the eight Presidents of the Republic of Indonesia, from 1972 to 2024.

During this time, Radio Sonora has consistently fulfilled its role as the fourth pillar of democracy by providing balanced information and always offering equal airtime for various perspectives and viewpoints. This diversity of thought aims to inspire listeners to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

In addition to its role as a mass media outlet, Radio Sonora also serves as a humanitarian agent through various missions and as a platform for community sharing. History records that Radio Sonora has consistently been present in humanitarian missions and solidarity efforts for Indonesians in need, providing aid to victims of floods, fires, natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, etc.), terrorism, and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Radio Sonora's active role as a humanitarian agent has been recognized with awards, such as the International Broadcasting Excellence Award 2002 from the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), presented on April 10, 2002, in Las Vegas, USA. This role was also appreciated by BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), which awarded Radio Sonora a certificate of appreciation as a media supporter in disaster management.

For 52 years, Radio Sonora has consistently delivered programs and events that inspire various audiences and generations. This programming and event presentation aligns with Sonora's vision and mission to enlighten and educate the nation through information, entertainment, events, and broadcast content.

Among the programs are DoRa (Sonora Stories), Ngopi Sore (Inspirational Conversations), Legal Clinic, Mental Health Program, Health Corner, AMKM Program, and Eid Homecoming Traffic Coverage. Regarding events, there are Sonora Goes to Campus, Sonora Goes to Residence, Sonora Peduli Stunting, National Dialogue Events, Webinars to support SMEs, Fun Rally, Sonora Festival, and many more.

Sonora has received numerous awards, including the PPKM Award 2023 from the Ministry of Health for being a radio media that helped disseminate information about the Covid-19 pandemic, an award from BNPB for disseminating disaster information, recognition from the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for supporting and committing to stunting reduction efforts in Indonesia, and the Central KPI Award, among others.
